William Young

March 6, 1919 — December 26, 2020

William Young Jr. affectionately known as Gramps will be remembered for his devotion to family, humorous storytelling and incredible cooking that put smiles on the faces of anyone who tasted it.
Gramps was born March 6, 1919 near Terrell, Texas to William Young Sr. and Lucille Taylor. He grew up on a farm where long hours in the hot sun produced just enough food and supplies to survive.
After serving in World War II, Gramps settled in Dallas where he met the love of his life, Georgia Mae Donald. They were married 61 years. He enjoyed telling colorful stories and she enjoyed "correcting" his facts. Looking after "Mama", as he called her, was the most satisfying mission of his life.
Gramps went to work for the Post Office in 1949 and carried the mail until his retirement in the early 1980s.
He was a deacon and elder for decades at Glendale Presbyterian Church in Dallas. He zealously studied books on the rules and order of the church and would fiercely debate anyone he thought was in danger of breaking them. Another strong passion of his was being a 32nd degree Mason. He gave years of faithful service as a member of Paul Drayton Lodge #9.
As the beloved family chef, Gramps' summertime barbeque, Christmas pancakes and mouth-watering chili were memorable highlights for several generations.
He loved to wear fine clothes, especially custom suits, and dress shoes. One of his best accessories to his wardrobe was his signature smile that would brighten up any room. He would oftentimes showcase his amazing memory through one of his favorite hobbies- talking. He generously shared wisdom, encouragement and impacted lives in a way that no one who knew him can ever forget.
Gramps was preceded in glory by his wife Georgia Mae and brother Henry Louis Young.
He is survived by son Gene Serrell and wife Doris;
grandsons Paul Serrell and wife Tracey; David Serrell and wife Rochelle.
great-grandchildren Elizabeth, Victoria, Alexander, Clerise, Jarvis and Jaelin
great-great grandsons Kyrie, Amir and Uriah along with nephews David Young and Billy Young and a host of other family and friends.
