Virginia Ruth Smith

Virginia R. Smith, 89, died unexpectedly with her family by her side on June 6, 2023, at the Medical City Denton hospital. She was born June 9, 1933, in McKinney, Texas. She was raised by her mother, Gracie (Caton), and father, L.O. Kruse.

Virginia lived most of her life in the McKinney area where she enjoyed spending time baking, playing her favorites on the piano, watching the Texas Rangers, and seeing her great granddaughter, Layla, dance. When she wasn’t playing her psalms or favorite songs, she enjoyed listening to classic Christian music and Josh Groban or as she called him “Josh Gorbin”. Virginia found joy in the little things and could often be found with a bottle of Coca-Cola and an Almond Joy close at hand, regardless of her nut allergy. Virginia was well known for her stubborn wit and no-nonsense attitude. Her signature sent was Wind Song by Prince Matchabelli, she always kept several bottles on hand.

In addition to joining her parents in Heaven, Virginia is reuniting with her daughter, Susan “Sue” (Cunningham) Hamm; granddaughter Cindy (Herrmann) Flowers; grandsons Joshua Cunningham, Timothy Cunningham, and Chad Middleton; sisters Ellen (Ouita) Mounger, and Judy Kruse; and brother Wellborn Case.

Survived by daughter Vickie Honea and husband Tom Honea of McKinney; son Jack Cunningham; and grandchildren Stacy Wood, Heather Hamack, Gerry Michael Cunningham, Roger Mueller, Brandyn Cunningham, and Ronald McGowin; and her 13 great-grandchildren. Virginia is also survived by her siblings Louise Arnold, Ruby Arnold, Jerry Kruse, and Jacky Kruse.

Services of Remembrance held on Monday, June 12th, 2023, at 12 pm after an open viewing at Charles W. Smooth & Sons Funeral Home in McKinney. Virginia’s final resting place will be next to family in the Wilson Chapel Cemetery located in McKinney.
