Rachel Scruggs

November 26, 1923 — March 30, 2021

On March 30, 2021 Rachel Scruggs, beautiful loving wife and mother, passed away peacefully at the Plaza at the Edgemere in Dallas. She was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, Quentin Scruggs who passed away in 2019. They were married December 14, 1946 in Nacogdoches, Texas. Rachel and Quentin were longtime residents of Garland. Rachel was born on November 26, 1923 in Timpson, Texas to Dollie "Jimmie" and Charles Sam Redding. She grew up the Henderson area and met Quentin at the old Randolph Hotel there where they both worked in 1946.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Billy Charles Redding and James Ray Redding.
Rachel was a homemaker and later worked for Safeway Stores Inc. Division office in their Insurance department. Rachel and Quentin were charter members of Monica Park Christian Church in Garland (1956) and later moved to First Christian Church of Garland. Their longtime church friends were a large part of their lives.
Rachel had a certain spark and vitality that drew others to her. She had a beautiful yet mischievous twinkle in her eyes. She cared so much for others, especially her family and friends.
Rachel was active in the Christian Women's Fellowship, Sequence Club of Garland, the Bud and Blossom Garden Club and the Book Review club and was the President of several PTAs in Garland.
She and Quentin cherished their many activities with friends including dancing, traveling, boating at Lake Texoma, and special monthly gatherings with their "dine-out and domino" group. She was an excellent homemaker and seamstress.
She loved to play many types of games. She and Quentin were excellent domino
players and enjoyed "42 Dominoes" all of their years together.
They had a precious 4 lb. Yorkshire Terrier named Scooter that she adored and was one of the highlights of her life!

Rachel is survived by her daughters, Jere Scruggs Hilton of Madison, Wisconsin, Charlotte Scruggs Clark of Dallas and Sally Scruggs Isom and husband Clay of Memphis, granddaughters, Jana Hemphill Palmer and husband Bill Palmer of Plano and Emily Clark Timon and husband Dr. Steve Timon of Dallas ( Matthew and Alexandra), 3 grandsons, 6 great grandchildren, beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. on April 9, 2021 at the First Christian Church of Garland, 115 S. Glenbrook Dr. Garland, TX 75040. There will be a visitation with the family at Noon just before the service at the church.
