Monty Ray Vandergriff, Jr. of Wylie, Texas, better known as "Jay", passed away peacefully on July 28, 2021, at 58 years young in Richardson, Texas. Jay was born on August 3, 1962, in Odessa, Texas to Sylvia and Monty Ray Vandergriff, Sr. He was preceded in death by his father. Jay graduated from North Mesquite High School and went on to Tarleton State University. Jay began his longtime career with Luminant in 1983. At the time of his death, Jay had been with his loving wife and best friend, Jennifer for 6 years.
Jay is survived by his wife, Jennifer; his 2 children, Lacy and Noah Gage; his granddaughter, Kinley; his stepchildren Blake and Ashley; his mother; 2 sisters; numerous other family members; and his newest puppy dog Jack.
Jay had a very magnetic and friendly personality; never met a stranger. He had many friends that he held near and dear to his heart. Jay enjoyed his work family and acquired life-long friends through his many years on the job. Jay had a passion for all sports but loved the Sooners of Oklahoma most. Jay played sports in his younger years, and went on to officiate sports such as football, basketball and baseball in his spare time. Jay and Jennifer shared a love for travel and took every opportunity to visit many destinations during their time together. Jay was selfless, kind and always there for those who needed a helping hand.
Family and friends are invited to attend the viewing on Saturday, August 14, 2021, beginning at 1:00pm. A short service will begin at 2:30pm followed by a Celebration of Life gathering until 5:00 pm. All events will be located at Charles W. Smith and Sons Funeral Home (2343 Lake Rd. Lavon, TX 75066).
