Mary Ellen Travers

Mary Ellen Travers, 71, of Garland, Texas, died March 15, 2023, in Garland, Texas. She was born on June 27, 1951, to Richard and Dorothy Harris in Dallas, Texas.  Mary graduated from Garland High School and was married to David Nathan Travers on April 5, 1985.

Mary served nine years alongside husband David who was Mission Pastor for Mountain View Baptist Church in Harker Heights, Texas. Following her service there, Mary worked as a bookkeeper at GTM Plastics in Garland and served as a secretary for many years at Rodgers Baptist Church in Garland.  She was surrounded there by a group of friends and co-workers she considered her extended family. Mary was also a mom and served her family well.

Mary was an active member of Rodgers Baptist Church.  She loved the Lord and was faithful to pray for her family, extended family, and her church.  Mary was a kind soul and loved to help acknowledge birthdays and special occasions with a card and a note of encouragement.  Mary was also loved and appreciated by the staff and residents of the Legend Oaks Healthcare Facility.

Mary is survived by daughter, Brittany Travers, son in law Martin Anderson, sister Vera Nell McElhaney, brother-in-law Joe Hawkins, sister-in-law Gloria Harris, 10 nieces and nephews, and many other great and great-great nieces and nephews.  Mary is also survived by many close friends from Rodgers Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister Wanda Smiley and husband Max, brother Larry Harris and wife Jo-Ann, brother Roberts Harris, sister Nancy Hawkins, brother-in-law Robert McElhaney, and sister Ella Mae Harris.

Visitation will be Monday, March 20, 2023 from 6 - 8pm at Charles W. Smith and Sons Funeral Home, 2925 5th St., Sachse, Texas 75048.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at 10am at Charles W. Smith and Sons Funeral Home.  A private graveside ceremony will follow at Restland Memorial Gardens, Dallas, Texas.
