Larry Joe Slaughter

December 2, 1948 — June 5, 2024

Joe Slaughter, born December 2, 1948, peacefully passed away on June 5, 2024, at the age of 75. He had humble beginnings in Garland, TX, and attended South Garland High School, where he actively participated in FFA. Joe's journey led him to serve in the United States Army after being drafted in May 1968 during the Vietnam War. Rising to the rank of Specialist, E-5, he operated bulldozers in an active combat zone, showcasing his dedication and bravery. His military service garnered him several prestigious honors, including the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with 4 Bronze Service Stars, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, proving his mettle as an Expert Marksman.

In matters of the heart, Joe found love twice. He first married Barbara Shortnacy in 1968, with whom he had two sons, Joe and Frank. Later in 1974, he tied the knot with Melba Davis and welcomed two daughters, Marisa and Lindsay, into their family. Joe's pride and joy were his 16 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, with three more great-grandchildren on the way. Throughout his life, Joe held various positions, working for the Garland City Water Department, Wylie Independent School District, Dallas Baptist University, and even navigating big rigs.  He loved spending time watching Walker Texas Ranger and NCIS, as well as eating at his favorite restaurants, Ballard’s and the Beef House.

With his passing, Joe leaves behind a cherished legacy of kindness, generosity, and care in the hearts of those whose lives he touched. He is reunited in peace with his parents, David Clinton and Marcella Slaughter, and his brother, Ronnie Slaughter (Sherry). Joe's memory lives on through his children, Joe (Shannon), Frank (Ashley), Marisa, and Lindsay (Rachel), as well as his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Jake, Justin, Patrick, Jurnee, Andrew, Dalton, Cade, Sarah, Ella, Rhea, Dylan, Riley, Luke, Brooke, Jack, Hadley, Slate, Carter, Alinea, Credence (due 7/24), Lainey (due 8/24), and Kai (due 10/24). His impact on their lives will forever be treasured, ensuring that Poppa Joe's spirit remains eternally present.
