Kathleen Gerwig Houston

March 13, 1957 — May 9, 2022

Kathleen Ann Gerwig Houston, age 65, loving mother of four, and adoring wife to husband John L. Houston, passed away on May 9th, 2022, in her family home in McKinney, Texas, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Kathleen was born on March 13th, 1957, in Kansas City, Missouri, to her mother, Julia D. Gerwig and to her father, John W. Gerwig. Her passion as a youth was barrel racing and showing horses. After Kathleen graduated from Jefferson Davis High School in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1975, she went on to study nursing at Spring Hill College, University of South Alabama and Providence School of Nursing.

After graduating with a degree in nursing, she landed her first job at Providence Hospital as a medical-surgical nurse kicking off a 38-year career in nursing. Her final transition as a nurse was as a Director of Nursing for a home health care agency in Plano, Texas.

In 1976, she met the love of her life, John L. Houston, and they wed on May 24th, 1980, in Mobile, Alabama, going on to have four children: Christopher, Ian, Robert and Meredith.

When Kathleen had Christopher, she decided to dedicate her life to being a fantastic and wonderful mother. Kathleen excelled at motherhood and was the foundation of our family, through and through. She was an excellent listener, always knew the right thing to say, gave the best advice, and the best hugs. Kathleen was always there to support her family and patients through the many passions and difficulties of their lives, and for that we are forever grateful.

Kathleen admired the ocean and when she wasn't filling her home with warmth and kindness, she could be found on a cruise ship with her husband or on the patio of her home playing the ukulele and listening to the waves.

Kathleen was predeceased by her parents, John W. Gerwig and Julia D. Gerwig. She is survived by her husband, John L. Houston; her children, Christopher M. Houston, Dr. Ian J. Houston, Robert T. Houston and Meredith L. Houston Wiese; and seven grandchildren. Additionally, she is survived by her sister, Susan Penney and brother, John Gerwig as well as cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

There will be a celebration of life at 10:30 AM on Saturday, May 28th, 2022, at First United Methodist Church in McKinney, Texas.
