John Ekes Sr. passed away on August 12, 2022 at the age of 93. He was born in a small farming town in Hungary in 1929. The family was forced to leave Hungary at the end of WWII when the communist Russian forces took control of eastern Europe. John survived difficult conditions faced by millions of refugees who ended up in Germany and found themselves in refugee camps. With grit and determination John found a daily food source by working for the United States Army.
John met the love of his life Florentine also a war refugee from Czechoslovakia and immigrated to the United States in 1955 when their only son John Jr. was 3 years old. They settled in New Jersey, learned English and became US citizens. John learned the art of brick and stone work. He quickly became an accomplished mason and owned a small masonry contracting business. Later in his life he built homes in New Jersey and nearby Pennsylvania.
After retirement John and Florentine moved to the DFW area to be close to family. They settled in McKinney where they built a home and lived there until recently moving into an assisted living community. John will be forever remembered by his love of home cooked meals and a good beer.
John is survived by his wife Florentine, son John Jr., grandson Eric and granddaughter Katrina along with 5 great grandchildren.
