Johan Vaandrager

Dr. Johan Vaandrager died peacefully at home December 30, 2011. He was born September 7, 1928 in New Sinkel, Indonesia where he grew up and was later interned in a Japanese POW camp as a teen. He survived and went back to the Netherlands with his family where he attended college and medical school at the University of Leiden. After marrying the love of his life, Hylkia, he immigrated to Dallas in 1961 with his family and made Texas his home. He had a private practice in Garland as a family doctor from 1964 until he retired in 2002. He was the loving and beloved husband of Hylkia Vaandrager-Halbertsma(who preceded him in death), father of Bastian Vaandrager, Clasine Dickson and husband Tom, Hendrik Vaandrager, Froukje(Kiki) Gillespie and husband Chris, Johanna(Janneke) McQuain and husband George, brother of Jacoba Vaandrager-Meijer Drees, and HenkVaandrager(who preceded him in death) and wife Henny, opa of eight grandchildren, uncle of numerous nieces and nephews, and friend to all. A private memorial service for the family will be held at a later date at Vallecito Lake, CO, his own "heaven on earth". In lieu of flowers, please send a memorial contribution to your favorite charity. Some of his favorites were American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, American Institute for Cancer Research, World Wildlife Federation, National Parks Conservation Association, and Special Olympics.
