Joanne Paula Wilcox

Dr. Joanne Paula Ames Wilcox, M.D., loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, age 83 of Melissa, Texas went to be with her Lord on December 27, 2011. She was born November 4, 1928 in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada to Paul and Della Hebel Ames.

In 1932 they returned to the United States where she grew up on a farm near Brooklyn, Wisconsin. In 1946 she was valedictorian of her Brooklyn High School graduating class. She received her B. S. degree in Medical Science in 1950 from the University of Wisconsin, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. She, then, served during the Korean War in the W.A. C. at Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas where she was involved in burn research.

She married Robert Earl Wilcox on May 18, 1951. After receiving her Texas State Teacher’s Certificate, she taught in the public school systems of San Antonio, Bryan and Melissa, Texas. She received her M. D. degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 1961 and completed her Straight Medicine Internship and a three year Neurology Fellowship at Baylor University Medical Center. She was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Dallas prior to her retirement.

She was a past member of the TSTA, TMA and DCMS. She was a member of Sigma Epsilon Sigma, the First United Methodist Church of McKinney, the Melissa Pioneer Club and the Lora Ryan Sunday School Class. For a period of time after retirement, she was an active volunteer in the school, church, and community.

She is survived by her husband Robert E. Wilcox of Melissa, Texas, sons Douglas and wife Dian of Round Rock, Texas, Mark and wife Susan of Atlanta, Georgia, Scott and wife Mary Lou of Cedar Park, Texas, and Gregory and wife Leigh of Frisco, Texas, Grandsons Adam, Brandon, Austin and Ethan, grand-daughter Brooke, brother Donald P. Ames and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Margaret, three brothers John, Rodney and William and a grandson Aaron.

A Memorial Service will be held at the First United Methodist Church of McKinney on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Don Renshaw will officiate. Interment will be in the Dallas " Fort Worth National Cemetery on Friday, December 30, 2011 at 10:45 a.m.
