Joan Van Horn

December 20, 1930 — February 25, 2021

Joan Sahl Van Horn passed away on February 25, 2021 at Texas Presbyterian Hospice after suffering a stroke. She was born on December 20, 1930 in Ida Grove, Iowa to Jens and Olga Sahl. She and her twin sister Jane were the fifth and sixth of seven children.

Joan was baptized and confirmed in the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove. She attended school in Ida Grove and graduated with the class of 1948. As many young women of that era did, she moved to Omaha, NE, taking a job with a large insurance company. She was employed with several insurance agencies most of her working life.

In Omaha, she met Dean Van Horn. He began to call her Joni and she was known as Joni ever after. They were married in 1953. Dean's various businesses took them to Sioux City and Council Bluffs, Iowa as well as Abilene, Fort Worth and finally Garland, TX. Sadly, they were never blessed with children.

Predeceasing her were her parents and siblings Emmett K., Jens Jr., Elmer, Elaine, Jane and Emmett. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Dean Van Horn and many nieces and nephews. She will be remembered fondly by many.

A Memorial Service for Joan will take place at 2:00PM on Tuesday, March 9, 2021, in the Chapel at Eastgate Funeral Home.
