Ethel Marie Barnes

April 21, 1940 — June 9, 2023

McKinney, Texas

On June 9th, 2023, the morning after her 65th wedding anniversary, Ethel (Angel) Marie Barnes was released from her struggle with dementia transitioning to her forever home with her Lord and Savior.

The third daughter of William and Opal Peterson, Ethel was born in Shattuck, Oklahoma on April 21st, 1940. She was raised in Gage, Oklahoma and a few weeks after graduation she married her high school sweetheart Russell Calvin Barnes.

During her lifetime she worked as a bookkeeper and bank teller; she enjoyed greatly her time as a detailed but patient trainer of other bank tellers. The role she excelled at best was that of loving wife and mother.

A strong prayer warrior, she and Russell raised three sons to be strong in their faith and walk with Christ. They adopted Eddie in 1963 after being told she would most likely not be able to carry a child to term. Ethel and Russell went to Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri in anticipation of becoming missionaries to Brazil. However, God had other plans which wonderfully included the birth of Paul in 1967 while at BBC and again in 1973 when Chad was born soon after they moved to Tyrone, Oklahoma.

They spent time in various towns in Kansas and Oklahoma before coming to Texas where they sampled the lifestyles of Gilmer, Anna, Coppell and McKinney.

Ethel survived breast cancer, benign brain tumors and even a heart valve surgery before dementia began settling in a few years ago.

Ethel was preceded in death by her sisters Maudie Matthews and Agnes Roedell, half-sisters Avis Hart and Elva Smith and a half-brother Vernon Leroy Peterson. Those learning to live with her absence include her husband, Russell Barnes; children, Eddie Barnes of McKinney, TX, Paul and Sherri Barnes of McKinney, TX, and Chad and Oblio Barnes of Anna, TX; grand-children, Jonathan Barnes of Anna, TX, Josh Barnes of Arvada, CO, Grace Dotson of Denison, TX; Haiden and Elly Barnes of Anna, TX.

Ethel loved her family with a passion and loved being with them as much as possible.

At Ethel's request, the family will have a private family gathering but there will be no other services.
